Maintaining hydration for your skin: How to find the right balance between water and oil

Have you ever thought of skipping your moisturizer because you felt it was the culprit of your breakouts, or your skin gets insanely oily throughout the day, but you cannot seem to stop it no matter what skincare product you use? Believe it or not, your skin could be still dehydrated even after using a heavy and thick moisturizer.

Healthy, well-balanced skin is achieved not only through skincare products. We have to start the treatment from inside out, and hydration is a crucial factor in that. We tend to forget that our skin is an organ in our body as well, therefore what we eat and drink will affect it. When we don't drink enough water, our body becomes dehydrated, and in result, our skin becomes dull and dry with no elasticity making it more prone to wrinkles and even breakouts. Dehydration could also be the culprit of the excessive oil production you see on your face. Our body has a natural self-defense mechanism that acts as a balanced mediator to protect us. Dehydration can cause our outer skin barrier to weaken triggering this mechanism, so the body starts to overproduce more oil to balance and compensate for the dryness.

It is recommended that we drink eight 8-ounce cups of water per day, that is about two liters of water that we must drink daily to maintain a healthy body. Being a busy working mom of two, I know that drinking water is usually not in my list of priority to do's so I am always making an effort to remind myself to stay hydrated. One trick I have found helpful is to keep a big refillable bottle of water with me at all times in the car so no matter where I am going, I can always stay hydrated on the move.

Now, staying hydrated is of course only part 1 of the road to well-balanced, glowing skin. Using the right moisturizer is also essential in achieving that right balance between hydration and oil production. With that said, here is our quick guide for choosing the right moisturizer for different skin types.

 

Normal Skin

Healthy normal skin is a term used to describe well-balanced skin. Although the range for healthy skin is pretty broad, we can safely say that this skin type is usually very friendly to most skincare products. For those of you lucky enough to be blessed with this skin type you potentially have a free pass to try moisturizers of any form - cream, gel or lotion, they should all work well with your skin. Getting an all-around cream with proper UV protection would be a good option or choosing something that helps tackle anti-aging and dullness is best at giving your skin the radiance it needs.

 

Dry Skin

If you have this skin type, the rule of thumb would be to use a moisturizer that is super hydrating packed with ingredients such as Hyaluronic Acid which is well known for moisture-binding as it helps attract and retain the maximum amount of water on your skin. You can afford to use creams that are richer in texture to help soothe and keep the hydration levels up throughout the day. Do keep in mind that in some cases, dry skin can also cause sensitivity or acne so if you fall into these categories, using a gel-cream or light lotion as a moisturizer would be a good fit. Also, hydrating mists can be another way to keep your skin moisturized without needing a heavy cream.

 

Oily Skin

One of the most troublesome skin types when it comes to moisturizers. We always get asked the same question, "How can I moisturize my skin without having the oily and greasy feel?" The key is to use a light and fast-absorbing cream. Gel moisturizers are the best option for anyone with this skin type as they can provide the right level of hydration with a light texture that absorbs quickly. If you want to use a cream instead, choosing one that is thin in texture can help with absorption as well. Combination Skin

If your skin usually gets oily throughout the day yet you are no stranger to flaky, dry patches; then you are a part of this group. As someone who belongs in this group myself, I have gone through so many different types of moisturizers. It could be very confusing when you are trying to treat your flaky patches, but your oily t-zone does not agree with the treatment showing you some horrendous breakouts or vice-versa, your dry patches do not get enough hydration whenever you are trying to control the oil on your t-zone. The key is to find that delicate balance between hydration and oil production by using a moisturizer that is light and non-greasy yet hydrating enough for those dry areas. I have found that light creams with a high concentration of humectants such as hyaluronic acid and glycerin help keep the balance of water and oil on my skin as both of these are powerhouses when it comes to attracting and retaining moisture. Your body will most likely stop overproducing oil as long as your skin has enough hydration.

In conclusion, hydration is fundamental when it comes to the health of our overall body, including our skin. Well-balanced skin can only be achieved by the combination of proper hydration ( water, water, water!) and using the right moisturizer.
