“Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication”Leonardo Da Vinci
Have you ever wondered which steps in your Korean skincare routine you can really do without? Let’s say you are running late for class, you forgot to prep lunch for your child the night before or perhaps you just want to sleep a tad more in the morning. Do you really need to do the entire 10-15 step Korean skincare routine that many have been preaching and swearing by every day?
The answer coming from a skincare enthusiast is… Of course! your skin is your #1 priority so you must do whatever it takes and make it happen. However, a more realistic answer coming from that same skincare enthusiast would be… No, you can still provide quality care to your skin with fewer steps if you know exactly what to focus on. The truth of the matter is, women in Korea do not always sit in front of the mirror to complete a whole 10-15 step skincare routine every day – who’s got time for that? What they do make a priority to do though, is to always make sure that the core elements of their skincare routine are being taken care of – Cleanse, Treat, Hydrate and Protect are always a must!
As a working mom myself, I am constantly faced with the dilemma of having too much to do with not enough time. I, of course, love Korean skincare and who doesn’t like to have good skin, right? But skincare always tends to fall behind in my long list of priorities and a 10-15 step Korean skincare routine is just sometimes not realistic for me – let’s face it, that 8th step layer of cream does not really seem that necessary when you have a screaming toddler calling for you. So I started thinking…how can I maintain my skin while still having time to take care of everything else that needs my attention?
The key to maintaining good skin even when you are busy is to use products that can multitask for you while focusing on the core elements of Korean skincare:
This is a step that cannot be overlooked ever, especially as part of your PM routine. Double Cleansing is the best way to clear all impurities that have accumulated throughout the day on your skin. Sunscreen, makeup, dust – all combined with facial oils that your own body produces – can deposit into your pores resulting in excess sebum and breakouts. It is important to remember that most water-based cleansers cannot fully dissolve impurities produced by oil-based products such as sunscreen and makeup, as water and oil do not mix. This is why double cleansing is essential for maintaining a clear complexion.
Essence, Serum, Ampoule
A core pillar in Korean skincare, Essences are great for skin cell regeneration and hydration. I have found that Essence-Toners, are the best multitaskers as they help hydrate, rejuvenate, and tone your skin, prepping it to better absorb the rest of the skincare products that follow.
Serums and ampoules deliver a high concentration of ingredients and nourishment into the deep layers of your skin. You do not have to use all of these at the same time; however, if you are looking to treat a specific skin concern such as wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, large pores or more, these two are the best for the job.
Hydration, hydration, hydration! We cannot emphasize this enough. Hydration is key to keeping the oil production balanced on your skin. When our skin is dehydrated, our body’s self-defense mechanism kicks in by producing extra oil in order to protect our skin. Also, dehydration could lead to premature aging and wrinkles, especially for dry skin types. Therefore, having a good moisturizer that fits your skin needs is a must have.
Protecting our skin from the UV rays will help maintain our overall glowing complexion and keep awful flaky skin, wrinkles, and hyperpigmentation away. Yes, the sun can cause all of that! Wearing sunscreen at all times, even during cloudy days, will shield your skin from harmful UV rays and help prolong a youthful complexion.
It takes me about 5 minutes in the morning to go through these core steps and after trying this approach for about 3 months, I noticed my skin did not suffer like it used to whenever I was going through a busy week.
Keeping your Korean skincare routine to these simple steps whenever you are short on time can still help you treat, protect and maintain your skin for a glowing, youthful complexion no matter how busy you are.
Let’s get glowing!
